- "I'll tell you this: I will marry her. I will kill you if I must, I will have your half of the map. And then the world will see which brother has more honour."
- ―Vance to his brother, regarding Jing Lang, 1717.[src]
Vance Travers (1690 – 1717) was, alongside his brother Upton, the head of the Assassin bureau in Nassau. In 1717, he recruited a pirate named Edward Kenway to eliminate the leader of a smuggling ring in the city.
Upon reaching the smugglers' leader, Edward learned that he had, in actuality, been sent to eliminate Upton, another Assassin. Upton revealed that Vance had formed a relationship with a visiting Templar, Jing Lang, who sought to use him to obtain a fabled treasure.
Following a futile attempt to pull Vance away from Lang's influence, it was decided that he had to die. Edward then proceeded to eliminate both Vance and Jing Lang.
