Uesegi (died 1868) was a Japanese samurai who fought for his daimyo Matsudaira Katamori during the Boshin War.

Biography

Uesegi was once the great hope of all the samurais in Katamori's guard. However, once Shiba Ibuka rose up the rank as more impressionable and sociable, he lost his stardom and remained in the shadows of the army. As a result, Uesugi began bullying Ibuka any chance he got in order to make Ibuka fall from his stance.[1] During the Battle of Toba–Fushimi, Uesegi and his fellow samurai fought against the Emperor Mutsuhito's forces. Although losing the battle, he noticed Ibuka in the woods hiding from combat.[2]

Before he could approach him, he was met by Taisuke, a soldier, who stopped him and stated about their flank is losing. In agreement, Uesegi charged the soldier to tell the daimyo the truth of Ibuka's cowardice. Initially agreeing with him, the soldier almost left but attacked the samurai instantly. Confused, Uesegi fought back with brute strength and knocked down the soldier. About to deliver the final blow, a mortar shot came and hit him instantly. Taisuke, who was Ibuka's sister Atsuko in disguise, awoke from the shot and found the liquid remains of what was left of Uesegi.[3]

Personality and traits

Uesegi appeared as a brute with no moral standing. His face was riddled with smallpox scars, a broken nose, an injured face, and missing teeth. His height nearly matched that of Shiba Tanomo.[1]
