Thoth is an Egyptian deity widely associated with the arbitration of godly disputes, the arts of magic, the system of writing, the development of science, and the judgment of the dead.[1] He is described as having the head of a green ibis, and as such, is symbolized by one.[2]
Legacy and influence
Thoth had a temple in Hermopolis dedicated to him until the mid-1st century BCE, when he was replaced by Hermes Trismegistus, a combination of both Thoth and the Greek deity Hermes, as the patron god of the city.[3]
Thoth was the husband-father of the goddess Sheshat,[4] and was depicted with her on the ancient tablets some of which the Medjay Bayek of Siwa found during his adventures in 1st century BCE.[3]
Around 38 BCE, the Hidden One Bayek helped an old man, Khui, to preserve his fading memory of the Old Divine ones by finding for him statuettes of three old gods, Thoth among them, while exploring Aten.[5]
