The Great Bimaristan

The Great Bimaristan was a hospital in Baghdad, located in the southwest of the Abbasiyah district. Hassan, a member of the Order of the Ancients, worked at the hospital as a doctor during the 9th century.[1]

History

In the 860s, Hassan began working on a machine for the Order, known as the Alruh, using Isu technology recovered from an excavation site southwest of Baghdad. After the inventor and Hidden One Ahmad ibn Musa unknowingly helped the Order find an Isu artifact, Hassan took it to his office at the Great Bimaristan and tried to make it work. When he was unsuccessful, he wrote a letter to Ahmad, requesting that he come to the hospital to help him repair the ancient device.[1]

Ahmad's fellow Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq, who was investigating his mysterious disappearance, found this letter and decided to head to the Great Bimaristan, arriving before Ahmad. After pickpocketing the key to Hassan's office from a nurse, Basim broke in and found evidence of Hassan's affiliation with the Order. He then eavesdropped on a conversation between three doctors and learned that Hassan was located in his laboratory upstairs.[1]

Infiltrating the laboratory through a broken window, Basim assassinated Hassan and was met by a confused Ahmad shortly after, to whom he explained the entire ordeal. As Ahmad had been unaware of Hassan's Order affiliations, he agreed to return to the Hidden One bureau in Abbasiyah if Basim kept his recent activities secret.[1]
