Concept art of the Nile Delta

The Nile is one of the longest rivers of the world, flowing through a number of African countries before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea via Egypt.

As the primary waterway and means of transport for Egypt, the Nile has played a vital role in the country's history; the vast majority of the country's cities, including Cairo, Alexandria, Memphis, and Thebes, were built on the banks of the river.

Trivia

  • The ancient Egyptians called the Nile Ar, meaning 'black', referring to the fertile, black silt the yearly floods left behind.
