Nassau is the capital, largest city and commercial city of the Bahamas.
In 1715, during the Golden Age of Piracy, Nassau became the capital of the self-appointed Pirate Republic, which operated under a revolutionary form of government, and was commonly visited by pirates, including the Assassin Edward Kenway, and the Republic's two de facto leaders; Benjamin Hornigold and Edward Thatch.
In 1718, the newly appointed and arrived Governor of Nassau - Woodes Rogers - quickly asserted his control over the island, effectively imprisoning all pirates, whether they accepted the King's pardon or not, effectively dissolving the young Pirate Republic.
