"The holy Martyrs made Agaunum illustrious with their blood."
―Francis' declaration for the Martyrs[src]

The Martyrs of Agaunum were a cult that were fixated on and named after the historical Theban Legion, a 3rd-century Roman squadron of 6,666 Christian soldiers.

History

By the 9th century, the Martyrs of Agaunum took the mantle of their name and were believed to use the graves of the Theban Legion for miraculous healing purposes.[1] At some point, they became allied with the Order of the Ancients, whose partnership proved fruitful when the Order gifted the Martyrs with impenetrable armor surrounding mostly their torsos.[2]

In 824, while tasked to transport a case containing an artifact of extreme importance to Baghdad, they enlisted a possible recruit, Francis,[3] to infiltrate a group of mercenaries hired by the Master Assassin Fuladh Al Haami to find the Martyrs, eliminate them, and recover the case they guarded.[4] While walking through the Sinai, the Martyrs armed themselves and hired multiple guards to protect their caravan as they rode towards Baghdad.[5] Thanks to Francis' sabotage,[6] they were able to withstand an ambush by Fuladh's group and even took out one of the mercenaries. Fleeing from their assailants, the Martyrs successfully lost their tail and continued towards their destination.[5]

While the Martyrs resumed their journey, they managed to hire their own mercenaries to hunt down Fuladh's group. However, the remaining mercenaries Roshan, Dias, and Azadeh, along with her wolf Onyx, overcame the ambush and killed them. Another disadvantage for the Martyrs came when the mercenaries discerned Francis' true allegiance, forcing him to flee and inadvertently leading the group straight to the Martyrs.[3]

Eventually arriving at Baghdad's House of Wisdom after a long journey, the Martyrs met with a customer from the Order of the Ancients to hand over their case. The Martyrs then began to perform a ritual, with Francis in attendance, while the customer opened the case. However, upon looking into the chest, the customer hissed at the Martyrs before they all heard an unknown whistle. Instantly, Onyx attacked and killed Francis, while Dias and Roshan managed to kill two Martyrs with deadly head blows. However, Fuladh's group was quickly overwhelmed by the remaining Martyrs, with Roshan becoming defenseless after losing her tahtib sticks.[2]

Onyx saved Roshan from being killed by a Martyr, but was mortally wounded in the process. Enraged, Azadeh jumped and killed the Martyr while Roshan wounded another Martyr. Before he could escape, the wounded Martyr was struck down by Fuladh, who later went to kill the customer. With Dias also eliminating the Martyrs who attacked him, the cult was ultimately dismantled.[2]

Skills and equipment

Along with their enforced armor gifted by the Order,[2] the Martyrs wore dark maroon robes and masks to cover their faces. On their chests, they showcased a golden symbol on their robes, a six-pointed cross.[5]
