Mara was an Egyptian woman who served as maidservant to Pasherenptah, the High Priest of Ptah in Memphis, and his wife Taimhotep during the 1st century BCE.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 48 BCE, Memphis was hit by frauds masquaraded as a series of "curses" conducted by Hetepi, a priest of Anubis under Pasherenptah and secretly a member of the Order of the Ancients, which caused Taimhotep to suffer numerous miscarriages. To that end, Mara accompanied Taimhotep to the seer's house in hopes of finding a way to prevent another miscarriage. They were later assisted in the ritual by the Medjay Bayek of Siwa. Through this ritual, they learned that Taimhotep was in fact poisoned and not due to the curse.[1]
After Hetepi's assassination by Bayek,[2] Mara remained by Taimhotep's side as she continued to weep over her unborn child, afraid that she would suffer another miscarriage. When Bayek came visiting, Mara informed Bayek of a protection ritual that would ease the anxiety, guiding Bayek to a black shop where he could find a fertility talisman. In addition, she also asked him to hunt for heron feathers and flamingo tongues.[3]
Once Bayek had done so, Mara and Taimhotep were guided by the Medjay to the Pyramid of Djoser, where they would perform the ritual under Bayek's watch.[3]
