Korea (South Korean: 한국; North Korean: 조선 ) is a cultural region and historical nation located in the peninsula of the same name in East Asia. It is currently divided between two sovereign states, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea).

History

Unified

Joseon dynasty

From 1392 to 1897,[1] Korea was ruled by the Joseon dynasty and was renowned for its rich cultural and academic tradition.[2] During the reign of King Seonjo, the country fought in the Imjin War against an invading Japanese coalition from 1592 to 1598.[3] This resulted in a long lasting animosity between the two nations and their people onwards.[4]

During the reign of King Yeongjo in 1725, a Joseon envoy was sent to the Manchu Qing Empire. However, the scholar and engineer Yun Pyeong-Gyu, who accompanied the envoy, was captured and held prisoner by pirates near the Philippines, until his rescue by the Assassin Edward Kenway.[2] Yun subsequently joined the Assassin's organization, the Zhang Wei Union, in Macau, where he built various weapons and tools for them while looking for a way to return to his homeland.[5]

Around 2015, Abstergo Industries maintained an office in South Korea's capital, Seoul.[6] That year, the Japanese Assassins' Mentor, Saeko Mochizuki, sent a team into North and South Korea to aid the local cells as part of the organization's global hunt for Álvaro Gramática, Abstergo's Director of Research in Future Technology. Gramática had become a top priority when the Assassins learned of his plan to reconstruct an Isu's body using a Shroud of Eden and his laboratory.[7][8]

During the early 21st century, Noa Kim lived in South Korea with his mother after his American father had abandoned the family in Noa's youth.[9] Despite facing financial problems, Noa dreamed of traveling overseas,[10] which he eventually got the chance to do in 2023, after winning a vacation prize trip to Macau paid for by Abstergo, though this was just a ruse to kidnap Noa and explore his genetic memories.[11]
