Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (26 January 1763 – 8 March 1844), later known as Charles XIV John of Sweden, was a high officer in the French Army who later became the King of Sweden, founding a new dynasty.

During the French Revolution, Bernadotte cultivated a rivalry with Napoleon Bonaparte, even marrying a woman that had originally been promised to him.
