Jan van Aert was a Dutchman who served as Chief Navigator for the Dutch East India Company. Based in the Portuguese colony of Macau, Jan, alongside Alan Jacob of the Far East Company and Master Sun of the Hualien Trading Company were rivals of the trading company led by Madam Lee.

Influenced by the Templars, Jan and the two hired the Shimazu clan[1] to eliminate Madam Lee at the Mandarin's House.[2]
