Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia consisting of a great archipelago of thousands of islands.
The Indonesian archipelago has been a valuable region for trade for centuries, and its inhabitants engaged in commerce with foreign entities since at least the seventh century. During the Age of Discovery, European powers fought to monopolise trade in Indonesia, with the Dutch ultimately emerging victorious and occupying most of the archipelago in the 17th century. Following three and a half centuries of Dutch colonialism, Indonesia secured its independence after World War II and has experienced rapid economic growth ever since.[1]
History
Colonial era
In 1619, the Dutch East India Company occupied Jayakarta, a major port city on the island of Java, following a power struggle against the British East India Company. The city was subsequently renamed to Batavia and became the de facto capital of the Dutch East Indies.[2]
In 1725, the members of the Zhang Wei Union traveled to Batavia after Jan van Aert, the Dutch East India Company's chief navigator, saved them from an ambush by the East India Company and Admiral Jeong's fleet. While in the city, Edward Kenway agreed to work together with Jan to stop their mutual enemies, who were in possession of two Pieces of Eden, and recruited additional allies to the Union's cause.[3]
During the Seven Years' War, the Colonial Templar Shay Cormac sent spies to Java to aid the British Empire in undermining the Dutch influence's over the island.[4] Successful in this attempt, Shay sent additional spies to continue pressuring the Dutch.[5]
Modern times
Intelligence uncovered by the hacker group Erudito indicated that Abstergo Industries had a secret laboratory somewhere in Indonesia, where they performed hundreds of experiments. [citation needed]
