Fazil Fahim al-Kemsa

Fazil Fahim al-Kemsa (died c. 860s), also known as Al-Rabisu, was the first scholar of the House of Wisdom in the Abbasid Caliphate's capital of Baghdad. Secretly, he was also a member of the Order of the Ancients. His mission was to unveil the secrets of the Isu by using the Alruh device.

Biography

Meeting the Caliph

By the 860s, Fazil became known as the "Great Scholar" of the House of Wisdom, due to his consumnation of books and knowledge. However, he also became a leader within the Order of the Ancients. In 861, he and the other Order leaders Ning, Mas'ood Al-Ya'qoob, Wasif al-Turki, and Ra's Al-Af'a, the Head of the Snake, Qabiha convened at the Winter Palace in Anbar, where Caliph Al-Mutawakkil awaited them with the chest containing an artifact. After verifying its authenticity and ordering the caliph to guard it, they left in his care before its transport to them. However, it was all for naught when the young thief Basim Ibn Ishaq came, killed the caliph, and stole the chest's content that night.

Working on the Great Work

After some time, under his instruction, Fazil told his underlings Hassan, known as Al-Azhdaha, to construct a device to unlock the secrets of "Those Who Came Before" and Zahra, known as Al-Zarik, to translate an ancient script they unearthed. Within the process, Al-Azhdaha delivered a prototype called Alruh, which he and Fazil stationed beneath the House of Wisdom, and named it his "Great Work." Fazil shared his Great Work with fellow Order member Mas'ood Al-Ya'qoob, who also became enchanted by the world he saw and encouraged him to finish his device.

As a result, Fazil requested more funding from the Qabiha, who granted the subjects in the form of injured laborers. To aid Al-Zarik's progress, Fazil orchestrated a book burning in the middle of the House of Wisdom while she abducted translator Hunayn ibn Ishaq to force him to translate the text they found. However, his book burning attracted the attention of Alamut Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq, who was sent to find the Order's influence at the House of Wisdom and find Ahmad ibn Musa, a fellow Hidden One who has been missing. To cover their tracks, Fazil had Zahra kill the Caretaker of Books.

Death

Fazil is assassinated by Basim

However, Fazil's subordinates' plans and actions were discovered by Basim, who later assassinated them. Fazil continued with his plans and began his showcase about his new findings about ancient Gods and the relics they left behind. While addressing his fellow scholars, he was soon informed by the kahraman of Hassan and Zahra's deaths by an assassin, who was there awaiting to kill him. Immediately, he fled quickly beneath the House of Wisdom to his device while the kakraman addressed the abrupt end of his showcase. Angry at his losses, Fazil continued with his experimentation with Alruh. Alone with his current subject, he monologued about his plans until his subject opposed the notion of knowledge being power. Fazil neared closer and was assassinated by his subject, who was Basim in disguise. Basim left quickly while Fazil's corpse laid atop Alruh.

Trivia

• Fazil Fahim al-Kemsa's Order mask is identical to the mask of the target in Assassin's Creed: Mirage cinematic world premiere trailer.
• His cryptonym, Al-Rabisu, is named after the Rabisu, derived from the Sumerian word for lurker, in Akkadian mythology, which are vampiric spirits or demons.
