The Champs-Élysées is an avenue in Paris, France that runs from the Place de la Concorde[1] to the Place Charles de Gaulle.[2]
Designed by landscape architect André Le Nôtre, who also designed the park of Palace of Versailles,[3] the Champs-Élysées was where Parisians who lived outside the ramparts used to gather, a place for all sorts of outdoor pursuits.[4]
By the middle of the 18th century, the Champs-Élysées had its own special police force, a group of ten or so Swiss soldiers tasked with maintaining order and arresting lawbreakers.[5] It also served as the backdrop for political affairs, such as Paul Barras's conspiracy to overthrow Maximilien de Robespierre. During the Reign of Terror, it was the most inconspicuous means of passage to the Bois de Boulogne park in order to hide. Suspects, escaped prisoners, draft evaders, and vagrants would hide there among the foliage and thickets.[4]
