Carthage was an ancient civilization centered in North Africa founded around 814 BCE. The Carthaginians eventually achieved dominance over the Mediterranean Sea starting from the fourth century BCE until their destruction by the Roman Republic in 146 BCE.[1]

History

During the Second Punic War against the Roman Republic, Carthaginian forces commanded by Hannibal Barca were aided by Kassandra and the Chinese youxia Wei Yu on a battle on the Ionian Islands. Wei Yu killed the Roman general in combat and acquired a stone tablet in his possession, which he gave to Kassandra in exchange for information regarding his disciple's condition.[2]

Military

Carthaginian military was considered quite powerful at their height, with their heavy infantry soldiers carrying swords powerful enough to pierce enemies' shields and helmets.[3] Their ships were also considered superior, and this advantage lasted until the Romans captured a Carthaginian vessel and adopted its better features into the construction of their own fleet.[4]
