Aulus Gabinius (died c. 47 BCE) was a Roman statesman and general prominent during the latter days of the Roman Republic.
In 55 BCE, Gabinius was sent by Pompey to Egypt to assist the pharaoh Ptolemy XII Auletes in restoring his kingdom after its citizens deposed him in favor of his daughter, Berenice IV.[1] After doing so, he left 2,000 troops in Alexandria and charged them with protecting the pharaoh and the royal family. These troops later came to be known as the Gabiniani.[2]
