The Gray One (died 860s) was the alias of a spy working for Tabid Al-Nubi, Hidden One Rafiq of the bureau in Baghdad's Abbasiyah district.

History

As part of his spy mission, The Gray One entered the Round City disguised as a wine merchant to gauge the defenses of the Abbasid Caliphate. In his findings, he reported that the Round City was mostly filled with mercenaries from the steppes and the desert outside the city, many of whom came from the ranks of the Turkic Warlord Wasif Al Turki. He also reported the presence of fanatical bodyguards deeply loyal to the caliph and that a revolt would likely be crushed right away.[1]

Midway through his investigation, The Gray One was exposed due to his lack of knowledge about wine, which drew suspicions from the nearyby guard. In another letter, he informed Tabid of his plan to flee the Round City at night, and sought to make use of the ropes the Rafiq had given to scale the city walls to safety.[2]

However, The Gray One was discovered during his escape attempt, and the confusion led to him plummeting to his death. Tabid learned of his death and wrote a letter to the Council in Alamut to report on the spy's status.[3]
