Saigo Kayano was a daimyō that fought for the Tokugawa shogunate during the Boshin War. He was also a member of the Saigo Clan and the owner of the Musashi Masamune, the personal weapon of the legendary ronin Miyamoto Musashi.
Despite being trained in the art of bushido, Saigo was an incompetent samurai that could not fight back against his opponents. As such, he had to be protected by Nakano Takeko, an onna-musha from the Aizu domain. Unfortunately, he was later killed and the Musashi Masamune fell into the possession of Matsudaira Katamori, William Lloyd and eventually Shiba Atsuko for the rest of the Boshin War.[1]
