Apollonia (Greek: Ἀπολλωνία) was a small Greek city located north of Cyrene in the region of Kyrenaika, named after the Greek god, Apollo. During the 1st century BCE, the city was used by the Romans to construct war ships in the region.

History

Apollonia was founded by Greek settlers from Thera around the same time as the founding of Cyrene, serving as the city's main harbor. By the time the Romans took control of the region of Cyrenaica, the city had became a significant commercial centre in the southern Mediterranean in its own right.[1]

By 47 BCE, the Roman navarch Marcellus Asina had served as the leader of the military in Apollonia, and was supplied with money by the Cyrenean magistrate Leander to build triremes.[2] That year, the Medjay Bayek visited Apollonia during his time to hunt down the Order of the Ancients leader Flavius Metellus in Cyrene. There, Bayek aided an Egyptian woman named Agatha to rescue his son, and remove Marcellus Asina from power.[3]

Around the same time, Bayek also aided the smuggler Sminthos in his quest to acquire money in order for him to purchase a farm and retire.[4]
