Emperor Meiji (1852 – 1912), personal name Mutsuhito, was the 122nd Emperor of Japan. He was the first monarch of the Empire of Japan and led a major political, economic and social revolution that transformed the state into an industrialized world power.
In 1868, Meiji, backed by the Japanese Rite of the Templar Order who had infiltrated the Imperial Court, launched a campaign against the Tokugawa shogunate which led to the restoration of imperial rule to Japan.[1]
