Faiyum

Faiyum, also known as Moiris in Greek, is an oasis in Egypt, located to the west of the Nile and south of Cairo. It was once a great sea, but by the time of the Old Kingdom, the water levels had decreased, leaving behind the bones of ancient whales. During the reign of Cleopatra in 48 BC, Berenike was the Nomarch of Faiyum.
