Kawab was the son of Maharet and Taharqa, Letopolis' steward and a secret Order of the Ancients member. After his father's death at the hands of the Medjay Bayek of Siwa, Kawab embarked on a journey to hunt down Bayek as vengeance. After Bayek defeated Kawab and his bounty hunters, he convinced Kawab to put his past behind him and join Bayek's new brotherhood, the Hidden Ones.

Biography

Meeting the Medjay

Named after the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Khufu's eldest son, Kawab lived in the village of Sais, with his mother Maharet and grandfather Ghupa. His father Taharqa was Letopolis' steward and grand planner, thus he was always away from the town, and Kawab was therefore unaware of what his father's work truly entailed.[1]

In 48 BCE, when the Medjay Bayek of Siwa came to Sais to hunt down the Order of the Ancients member known as "The Scarab", the town's brewer Harkhuf directed him to Kawab, whose grandfather had been nearly beaten to death with his tongue cut out. When asked about Ghupa's whereabouts, Kawab informed Bayek that Ghupa had left on the road to Camp Pyrrhos and had not returned. Bayek assured him that he would look for his grandfather before sending him to play with the kids.[2]

Bayek later returned to Kawab's home with an injured Ghupa, who was searching the Scarab. When Bayek asked about Taharqa's whereabouts, Kawab informed him that his father was away working in Letopolis. Ghupa later gave Kawab a letter, directing him to pass to Bayek. As the letter mentioned that the Scarab was summoning warriors to Letopolis, Bayek made it his intention to travel to the city to help Taharqa. Before Bayek left, Kawab gave him a wooden toy horse, asking him to deliver to his father.[2]

Taharqa's death

Sometime after Bayek assisted Taharqa in defending Letopolis from a bandit attack, Kawab, Maharet, and Ghupa joined them in the Temple of Horus, where they shared a family dinner. However, Bayek fainted after drinking a cup of spiked wine and was taken away by Taharqa. Unbeknownst to Kawab and his family, Taharqa brought Bayek to the Khensu Nome and buried him up to his neck in the desert, intending to leave him for dead.[3]

Eventually, Bayek escaped and returned to assassinate Taharqa in the temple, ending his tenure over Letopolis. Kawab and his family arrived and witnessed the scene, causing him to attack Bayek in anger before Ghupa pulled him away. Bayek explained the reasons for his actions, revealing Taharqa's identity as the Scarab and Ghupa's torturer, much to Maharet's disbelief. Before departing, Bayek urged Maharet to diverge Kawab's path away from his father's.[3]

Quest for vengeance

Kawab: "All my life has been revenge and killing. But I believe what you are saying. Give me strength Maat to trascend who I am, to become a shadow of power and cause."
Bayek: "Abandon yourself, and you become one of us."
Kawab: "Then it is so. I will renounce my name, my family. I will find a new one, as a liberator, along side you Bayek."

Despite Ghupa and Maharet's attempts, Kawab was driven on a path of vengeance against the Medjay, tracking him across Egypt and eventually to the Sinai Peninsula in 38 BCE. That year, he hired two mercenaries, the Shadow of the North and the Shadow of the South, to patrol the Arsinoe and Madiama Nome in search of his father's killer, though Bayek instead hunted them down and learned Kawab's location from their personal effects. Kawab confronted him in the desert and attempted to regain his father's honor.[4]

However, Bayek defeated him, convincing him to give up on vengeance and use it for a greater cause. Kawab accepted his loss and ultimately joined Bayek as a Hidden One.[4] With the Klysma bureau in Sinai destroyed,[5] Kawab trained in the new Arsinoe bureau. There, he informed Bayek of his intentions to travel to the Herodian kingdom's region of Judea to counter its tyrannical ruler, Herod I.[4]

Personality and traits

As a child, Kawab admired his father very much and believed in what he was doing.[1] After his father's death, he trained for 10 years in hopes that he would kill Bayek and avenge Taharqa.[4] Upon being defeated by Bayek and joining the Hidden Ones, he renounced his family and became a loyal member of the brotherhood.[4]
