Jules Brunet (1838 – 1911) was a French Army officer and a member of the French Brotherhood of Assassins, who played a famous role in the Boshin War.
Captain Brunet was sent to Japan with the French military mission of 1867 to assist the shōgun Tokugawa Yoshinobu in his efforts of modernization of the Japanese Army. After the abdication of Tokugawa in 1869, Brunet choose to stay despite the mission being recalled to France by Emperor Napoleon III.[1]
He later became a General and Chief of Staff of the French Minister of War in 1898.
Behind the scenes
In the novel Assassin's Creed: Fragments – Aizu's Blade Brunet claimed to be part of the French Third Republic however given the novel's setting of 1868 that should have been the Second French Empire which didn't collapse until 1870.
