Hrólfr Kraki was a semi-legendary 6th century Danish king who was said to have scattered gold across the Fyrisvellir as a distraction for the pursuing forces of king Eadgils to enable his escape.

Legacy

In 985, in the lead up to the Battle of Fýrisvellir, Östen Jorundsson and Alferth were approached by Skarpe at their campfire who'd been rummaging in the Fyrisvellir mud for coins, for which Alferth thought him a fool. Alferth, however was adamant that King Eadgils may not have gotten every piece that Hrólfr had thrown. Östen stepped in before their infighting could escalate.[1]

Days later, while crossing the Fyrisvellir to assassinate Styrbjörn the Strong, the Assassin Thorvald Hjaltason found a piece of hack-gold in the dirt and considered that there may indeed have been truth to the legend before realizing that Hrólfr's ploy could be useful for his own strategy. He then coated several Arab dirhams in poison to use against Styrbjörn.[2]
