Giovanni Battista Caviglia (1770 – 1845), was an Italian Egyptologist.
In 1818, Caviglia undertook the task of freeing the Great Sphinx at Giza from the sand which had covered it, in the process discovering the Dream Stele, a 15-ton stela built by Thutmose IV to commemorate his dream. Caviglia was looking for an entrance into the structure of the Sphinx, but instead, he discovered an open-air chapel and stelae between the paws.[1]
That same year, Cavigilia discovered fragments of the Sphinx's beard that had probably been added during the New Kingdom.[2]
