The Far East Company was a British trading company during the 18th century which operated in the easternmost region of Asia, commonly referred to by Europeans as the Far East.
History
In Portuguese Macau during the 1720s, the organization was represented by Alan Jacob,[1] who was secretly the Grand Master of the British Rite of the Templar Order.[2] In 1725, Alan collaborated with Jan van Aert of the Dutch East India Company and Sun of the Hualien Trading Company to sabotage a rival trading enterprise led by the Chinese businesswoman Madam Lee and bolster their own companies' profits in the process.[1]
Under Alan's direction, the Far East Company began trafficking opium, which was labelled as contraband by the local authorities, and attempted to cover up the operation by framing Lee's company for smuggling the drugs into Macau. However, Alan's plan was foiled by the British Assassin Edward Kenway, who raided one of the Far East Company's ships transporting opium and exposed their drug trafficking to the public.[3]
After the company's ship was detained by the Dutch Navy, both Lee and Sun sought to acquire its opium cargo for their own benefit.[4] However, they ultimately failed in this endeavor as the ship and its cargo were destroyed by Kenway and his allies, John Young and Rupiya.[5] The Far East Company later retaliated by using its influence to blacklist Kenway's recently-established organization, the Zhang Wei Union, making it near-impossible for its members to find any clients.[6]
Around this time, the company, on Alan's orders, began looking for a codebreaker to decipher an encrypted sea log in the Templars' possession. They also recruited people for an expedition in Indochina, which had the goal of locating the lost Khmer city of Angkor, an alleged Isu site.[6]
