"Curse you all, Assassins and Ramírez! I am my own man from this moment on! I will bring the artifact to Torquemada alone, and share the reward I reap with no man! Rot in hell, all of you! I will live and thrive long after you have torn one another to pieces!"
―Diego de Alvarado, after betraying and killing Gustavo Ramírez, c. 1492.[src]-[m]

Diego de Alvarado (died c. 1492) was a member of the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins who led a bureau in Burgos before defecting to the Templars and the Spanish Inquisition. By acting as a double agent, he was able to help Grand Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada acquire one of the three sections of the Shattered Staff of Eden.

Biography

In the late 15th century, Diego was placed in charge of leading an Assassin bureau in Northern Spain, particularly in Burgos, a region which most Spanish Assassins, including Aguilar de Nerha, were unfamiliar with.[1]

After the fall of Granada and the recovery of the Apple of Eden by Aguilar in 1492,[2] the Master Assassin attempted to contact Diego for leads on the Templar Gustavo Ramírez's whereabouts, whom the Assassins believed to be in northern Spain. However, Diego was captured by Ramírez, who 'tortured' him for information on a section of a Staff of Eden.[1]

Ramírez was able to convince Diego to support the Inquisition and work as a double-agent for the Templars instead.[3] This led Diego to reveal the whereabouts of the last section of the Staff, allowing Ramírez to continue his search. As the Assassins arrived to rescue him from his 'imprisonment', Diego maintained his façade as a loyal Assassin and directed Aguilar and the others to Sahagún for leads on Ramírez's whereabouts.[1]

Sometime later, Diego travelled to Sobroso Castle, where Ramírez had recovered the last section of the Staff, rumored to be part of the golden staff of Saint James. The Assassins arrived too late, witnessing Diego's betrayal and Ramírez retrieving the artifact. Before they could confront Diego, they were stopped by del Salto, one of Ramírez's lieutenants.[3]

Diego then went to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in order to give Ramírez the Staff piece in his possession. When the Assassins arrived, having followed Diego, the Inquisition soldiers prepared to fight them. However, Diego surprised everyone present by betraying and stabbing Ramírez in the back before fleeing.[4] He subsequently went to the University of Salamanca, where the Assassins had sent another piece of the Staff to be guarded. Posing as a member of Aguilar's team, Diego was able to trick the scholars and acquire the artifact.[5]

With two Staff pieces in his possession, Diego delivered them to Tomás de Torquemada, who already possessed the third section, intending to share the Staff's power with the Grand Inquisitor. He later went into hiding and fortified himself inside some ruins between Salamanca and Ávila. There, the Spanish Assassins would finally track down and confront Diego, mortally wounding him in combat. In his final moments, Diego told the Assassins that Torquemada was in possession of the complete Staff of Eden and that they were too late to stop him.[6]
