Al-Ula Valley[1] is a region named for the market city of al-Ula in what is now Medina Province, Saudi Arabia.[2] Many different authorities controlled it throughout the first millennium BCE, namely, the Dadānite and Lihyanite Kingdoms around 500 BCE; the Nabataean Kingdom, which established their regional authority at Hegra; and the Roman Empire following their annexation of the kingdom into the Roman province of Arabia Petraea.[3] The region was considered a mandatory stop along the Incense Road's land routes due the availability of water and food produced at the local oasis.[1][4]
