AlUla Oasis

AlUla Oasis is a region east of the Al-Ula settlement that covers over 200 hectares of the greater Al-Ula Valley.[1] In the 9th century, it was at the edges of the Abbasid Caliphate and was surrounded by the valley's Southern Wilds.[2] Al-Ula's citizens often relocated to family farms at the cooler oasis during the summer.[3]

History

The region's high water table and soil fertility led to the development of cultivated oases since ancient times,[3][1] with the Dadanites, Lihyanites, and Nabataeans having dug a number of wells to access the fresh water.[4]

Composed of both open fields and walled gardens[1] with elevated walkways, the oases produced wheat and barley in winter, and dates in late summer and early autumn; the Nabataean Kingdom would later cultivate cotton for use and trade.[3] In the early 8th century CE, it fell under Islamic control from the Umayyad Caliphate, and it was during this time that an underground qanat system was implemented to facilitate carrying water from the aquifer to the fields, where it was then distributed among the plots through surface channels.[4] A variety of citrus fruits were also introduced at this time; these goods and other products grown in the Oasis were then sold in local markets.[3] In the 20th century, the qanat system was replaced with mechanical pumping techniques.[4]
