Badarud-Din I (died c. 1740) was the 17th Sultan of Sulu, reigning from 1718 until his forced retirement in 1732.[1]

Biography

In 1725, Badarud-Din welcomed the Dutch East India Company's Chief Navigator Jan van Aert into his court. During their meeting, Jan informed the sultan that his associates in the Zhang Wei Union held a powerful artifact that may interest him.[2] Sharing a common desire to see the Spanish Empire's dominion over the Philippines brought to an end, Jan promised to deliver the artifact into the sultan's hands to help him gain an advantage over his rivals. In exchange, the sultan guaranteed Jan and his associates' protection for the duration of their stay in Sulu.[3]

When the Zhang Wei Union's members reached Sulu, they reluctantly renounced the artifact after the Sultanate's fleet threatened them, and it was subsequently stored in a warehouse until the sultan's arrival.[3] However, the Union members later escaped confinement and attempted to recover the artifact, while the Chinese Assassins led by Xiao Han simultaneously sought the relic for their own ends.[4]

In the end, the Chinese Assassins were the ones to claim the artifact after a lengthy battle,[5] and both they and the Union members escaped from the Sultanate, despite the Suluese guards' efforts to stop them.[6]
