Sōken-ji (摠見寺) is a Buddhist temple in the city of Ōmihachiman in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.[1] During the Sengoku period, the temple was located on the grounds of Azuchi Castle in the province of Ōmi.
History[edit | edit source]
In the spring of 1581, Oda Nobunaga's new retainer Diogo, on the orders of his mentor Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, met with Lady Nene at Sōken-ji to learn the art of calligraphy. While practicing under her guidance, she told him how this art is composed of many virtues, such as righteousness and courage, and how it can lead one to understand balance and form.[2]
In 1582, Diogo, now going by Yasuke, returned to the temple and met with Lady Nene, who was thankful for his arrival. Discussing Nobunaga's death, Nene offered her alliance to Yasuke and his fellow Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe against the Shinbakufu. From her own network, she had learned that the Shinbakufu maintained a presence in Ōtsu, where her local contact Aoi could help Yasuke uncover more information. She also told him that her husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi's forces could be found in Harima at Himeji. Thanking Nene for the information, Yasuke wished her well and left.[2]
Sometime later, Yasuke, accompanied by Naoe, visited Sōken-ji and collected two lost pages scattered around the temple grounds. Naoe also ventured to the top of the temple's pagoda to survey all of Azuchi.[3]
