Polemarchus (died 404 BCE) was an Athenian man who allied with the Athenian general Thrasybulus against the Thirty Tyrants' reign.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Polemarchus worked with the thief "The Nightjar" and his group in order to sell weapons to Thrasybulus in Boeotia. The Thirty Tyrants' leader Critias eventually learned of his involvement and had the Spartan soldier Bakchos beat the Athenian for this while a hoplite searched his cart for evidence of collaboration. When the Spartan found a pouch of Boeotian drachmae, Critias ordered Polemarchus' summary execution. Although Critias' fellow oligarch Theramenes intervened and seemed to have convinced his leader that the man deserved a fair trial, Critias instead had Bakchos drag Polemarchus away[1] and kill him off-site.[2] A year later, Thrasybulus memorialized Polemarchus in a speech following an Athenian victory in the Battle of Munychia.[2]
