Andrew the Apostle (Aramaic: אַנדּרֵאוָס; c. 5 CE – 60 CE), also called Saint Andrew, was one of Jesus of Nazareth's Twelve Apostles and the elder brother of Saint Peter.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Andrew is said to have been martyred by crucifixion at the city of Patrai, Achaia, in the year 60 AD. Andrew had requested that he be crucified on a saltire, an X-shaped cross, deeming himself unworthy to be killed on a vertical Latin cross as Jesus had been.[2]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In 1650, the Chiesa di Sant'Andrea della Valle was erected in his honor in Rome.[3]
In 1794, the French Assassin Arno Dorian had to solve a riddle that mentioned Andrew in order to acquire the Eagle of Suger.[4]
