Manila Cathedral

The Manila Cathedral (Spanish: Catedral de Manila), officially the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is a Catholic minor basilica and cathedral situated near Fort Santiago in Manila, Philippines. It was originally constructed in 1571 as a parish church and has since been rebuilt seven times, with the lastest version of the building being completed in 1958.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1725, the Assassin Edward Kenway climbed to the top of the cathedral to survey the surrounding area and locate Fort Santiago.[2] Later, a monk who was leading a riot in Manila gathered all of his followers in front of the cathedral, where they set up a bonfire while the monk declared his intention to "cleanse" the city of all "non-believers", beginning with the Governor-General.[3]
