Heimdall's Tower

Heimdall's Tower was a tower in the center of Asgard located at the end of Asgard's rainbow bridge, the Bifröst. Heimdall's Tower also connected to other worlds in the Nine Realms by way of immense doors carved into its base.

History[edit | edit source]

In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin's time at Asgard, Odin responded to and fought against the invading jötnar, making his way to Heimdall's Tower. Odin noticed more jötnar warriors guarding the gate to Jötunheim. Odin and his forces defeated the invaders as Odin closed the door, blocking the gate from the jötnar. Blaming Loki for not guarding the gate, Odin heard pleas from an unknown source. Investigating closer, Odin found Loki interrogating a prisoner, a newcomer who only called himself "The Builder" and claimed he wanted to help the Æsir with the jötnar influx.[1]

Interested, Odin agreed to help The Builder, as he tasked himself to retrieve the water from the Well of Urðr, as Loki helped find the clearing for The Builder's experiment.[1] After a sojourn into Jotunheim seeking a way to avoid his fated death in Ragnarök at the hands of Loki's bastard son Fenrir, Odin returned back at Heimdall's Tower. There, Odin was met by Ivaldi, who was told by the Nornir about his arrival. During their meeting, Odin received the cord Gleipnir with which to restrain Fenrir, and in return, he kept his promise to Ivaldi.[2]

Through his ventures, Odin inspected the area of Heimdall's Tower for Ymir's Tear Stones for Ymir's Altar in Asgard. Odin found one stone in a chest west of the tower, another tear stone in a tent camp's chest north of the tower, and a third stone under the floor beneath the tower's main gate.[3]

Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]

In the 9th century, during Eivor's travels in Hordafylke, Norway, Heimdall's Tower was used as a sexual euphemism as the Raven Clan warrior helped a Norse raiding couple reconnect with each other.[4]
