Essex (Old English: Essexe) a county in the southeast of England, northeast of London.
History[edit | edit source]
Once an Anglo-Saxon kingdom in its own right during the early Middle Ages, Essex and numerous other kingdoms were eventually absorbed into Wessex in the 800s.[1] By the 870s, the region was led by an ealdorman named Birstan, who was appointed by King Alfred.[2]
