Eadred was an Anglo-Saxon thegn who lived in Colcestre in the 9th century. One of the frequent guests of Ealdorman Birstan, Eadred was one of the lords who questioned the ealdorman for his lack of professionalism and expertise at his duty.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Little is known about his past, yet Eadred was one of three thegns of Essexe, under the leadership of Birstan. Eadred also held a soft spot for Lady Estrid as he believed she deserved better than Birstan.[1]

In 875, at the Ealdorman's House, Eadred was seen arguing with Wyatt, who stated he and the other lords were waiting for Birstan and that the ale was running out. After Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan found the ealdorman and brought him back to his house, Eadred and the other thegns started to push Birstan on his thoughts of their current dilemmas. Eadred asked Birstan about how to deal with the presence of Aelfred's soldiers and Birstan responded with the aid of Eivor's advice. After hearing no actual solutions, Eadred and the other thegns insulted Birstan for being a hopeless ealdorman and Birstan quickly dismissed them from his house.[1]

Eadred can be seen at the party of Birstan's, who welcomed Alfida, his lost sweetheart, into his home, after his wife, Estrid, was recently "kidnapped".[2]
