Casimir Lai was an Italian who served in the French Foreign Legion, serving as a military musician.[1]

On 30 April 1863, Lai's unit, which had been participating in the Second French intervention in Mexico,[1] was ambushed by the Mexican army. The 65 legionnaries took up positions in a nearby hacienda to defend themselves, though they suffered great losses. Lai, who had been gravely wounded and left for dead, escaped becoming a prisoner of war and was later rescued by reinforcements from the Foreign Legion. Lai had been tasked with protecting a Crystal Skull, no matter the cost, and they managed to smuggle it out of Mexico inside his drum.[2]
