Bálsvín was a wild boar reanimated by Hel using fire to simulate the life-supporting energy of warm-blooded animals, along with Bálulfr, the wolf. Due to their nature, exposure to intense cold or sudden dramatic drops in temperature can trigger an early demise.[1]
In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin at Niflheimr, the Isu fought Bálsvín at Kaldstad during his efforts to reach Hel at her castle.[2]
