Bálsvín was a wild boar reanimated by Hel using fire to simulate the life-supporting energy of warm-blooded animals, along with Bálulfr, the wolf. Due to their nature, exposure to intense cold or sudden dramatic drops in temperature can trigger an early demise.

In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin at Niflheimr, the Isu fought Bálsvín at Kaldstad during his efforts to reach Hel at her castle.
