The Byzantine army was the ground force of the Byzantine Empire. A direct continuation of the Roman army, it operated alongside the Byzantine navy throughout the empire's territories from the 4th until the 15th century.[1]

After the Fall of Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire's collapse, remnants of the Byzantine army came under the influence of the Templar Order, who used them to further their own goals. Essentially becoming the Templars' personal army in the Ottoman Empire, the Byzantines worked to destabilize the empire in the hopes of reclaiming control of Constantinople. They were also used by the Templars during their search for the Masyaf Keys.[2]

While possessing but a fraction of its former strength, the Byzantine army nonetheless was a formidable force, one that even the Ottoman Assassins struggled to keep at bay as they fought for control of their dens in Constantinople. However, opposed by both the Assassins and the Ottoman military, the Byzantines would eventually be driven out of the city for good,[2] and their army finally collapsed after Ezio Auditore, Mentor of the Italian Brotherhood, destroyed their headquarters in Derinkuyu, Cappadocia.[3]
