Burgh Castle was an Anglo-Saxon castle near Norwich in the Kingdom of East Anglia. During the Viking expansion in the 9th century, it was controlled by Rued's Viking clan.
History[edit | edit source]
Around 873 CE, Eivor Varinsdottir led an assault on the castle which resulted in the defeat of Rued and the rescue of Oswald of East Anglia. The Vikings Finnr and Valdis, Oswald's betrothed, also assisted. Finnr fought at the front with Eivor while Valdis led an attack from the rear. Eivor faced Rued in combat and defeated him. Once Oswald was free, he requested that Rued be spared. He and Valdis then traveled to Elmenham to be married.[1]
