Bertham was an Anglo-Saxon farmer who lived in Ravensthorpe in Ledecestrescire, England during the 9th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Bertham lived in Ravensthorpe on the cattle farm together with his mother Winfrith and stepfather Leofric.
During his stay in Ravensthorpe, he fell in love with Mayda from the fowl farm and wrote a number of love notes to her. Even though her father Bronson did not approve of their relationship, Mayda requested a house was build for them at the settlement in which they both could live together.[1]
During the Yule festival in Ravensthorpe, Bertham was put in charge of looking after the cows bred for the festival. When he took them to the river hoping to slay the animals himself and impress Mayda, one of the cows scared him and he ran off. The Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir was subsequently asked to help Bertham kill the cows and retrieve their meat.[2] After killing the cows with Eivor, he decided to participate in the brawl in the arena.[3]
