Matsudaira Katamori (松平 容保; 1836 – 1868) was the ninth daimyō of the Aizu domain and the Military Commisioner of Kyoto for the Tokugawa shogunate from 1852 until 1868. Katamori was the adopted relative of Matsudaira Katataka. As a Tokugawa loyalist, Katamori organized a personal guard of samurai in the Boshin War to fight against the Imperial Court of Emperor Meiji. His personal guard included Shiba Ibuka and Uesegi. After the death of Saigo Kayano, he also became the second individual to possess the Musashi Masamune,

During the Battle of Aizu, Katamori brushed aside Ibuka to fight the British Templar William Lloyd, but was quickly decapitated in a very short lived duel with only 2 blows form a highly skilled warrior like Lloyd. The Masamune was later picked up by Ibuka who managed to decapitate Lloyd before fleeing the area with Atsuko.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Historically, Matsudaira Katamori survived the Boshin War and was put under house arrest in Tokyo. Afterwards, Katamori was freed and later became the head kannushi of the Nikko Tosho-gu Buddhist shrine. In Assassin's Creed: Fragments – The Blade of Aizu, he is killed in the Battle of Aizu.
