Lockpicking is a skill in which an individual uses instruments to break a locking mechanism and gain access to either a location, or to take items of worth from a container.[1] As such, it has been adopted by both the Assassins and Templars.

History[edit | edit source]

During the Renaissance, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore used his Hidden Blade to unlock certain secret locations which kept desirable objects away from the attention of the general populace.[2] During his search for the Masyaf Keys, Ezio used the Hookblade created by the Ottoman Assassins to gain access to several more hidden locations in Constantinople in a manner similar to picking a lock with the Hidden Blade.[3]

With centuries of advancements in locksmithing, by the 18th century, lockpicking required the use of picks and tension wrenches to hold lock pins in place before opening the lock itself. The Assassin-turned-Templar Shay Cormac used considerable brute force when lockpicking barred doors.[4] The Templar Grand Master Haytham Kenway and his Assassin son Connor were also shown to be skilled lockpickers, unlocking various chests and doors.[5]

During the French Revolution, the French Assassin Arno Dorian used lockpicking to open doors and chests, eventually becoming a skilled lockpicker well into his tenure as an Assassin.[6] In 1805, while in Tripoli, Jan van der Graff used a comb to pick the lock of a gate and allow him and the Black Cross Solomon Bolden to enter an underground tunnel leading into Sultan Selim III's palace.[7]

During the Victorian era, the twin British Assassins Jacob and Evie Frye lockpicked chests scattered around London, obtaining valuable items such as schematics to upgrade their gear.[8] Decades later, Jacob's granddaughter Lydia Frye also used lockpicking on at least one occasion, to enter a woodworking shop used as a hideout by the Master Spy.[9]
