A dragon is a mythological animal found in many folklore and other mythologies. They are often described and depicted as a massive reptilian species with scales, horns, long tails, and claws. The ability to breathe fire from their mouth and fly with expansive wings are iconic traits of many European dragons, who were generally portrayed as enormous, destructive beasts which hoarded treasure and threatened human settlements.[1] In contrast, dragons in East Asia are depicted as serpentine and wingless—albeit still possessing the power of flight—and are revered as wise and benevolent entities.[2] They are far more symbolic of water and the power of nature,[3] as their activities are believed to bring rain to farmers or unleash thunderous storms.[2]

Mythology[edit | edit source]

In Norse mythology, the dragon Níðhǫggr was said to gnaw on the roots of Yggdrasil it lived between and only speak with the squirrel Ratatoskr, who reportedly would run along the tree between Níðhǫggr and the eagle at the top to convey gossip and other messages.[4] The dwarf Fafnir also turned into a dragon to covetously guard the cursed ring Andvaranaut and his mountain of gold[5] until the hero Sigurd stabbed him from behind and killed him.[6]

Iconography[edit | edit source]

In 873, the Raven Clan Viking Eivor Varinsdottir attended initial peace talks in Sciropscire between the Britons under the Welsh king Rhodri the Great and Norse under Ivarr the Boneless. At the conference, Rhodri insulted Ivarr and boasted that his seers had foretold only a dragon would kill him.[7] After Eivor successfully arranged for peace through Rhodri's wife Angharad ferch Meurig,[8] a warmongering Ivarr used a Brittonic knife with a dragon head shaped hilt to murder his ward Ceolbert,[9] son of the new Mercian king Ceolwulf II,[10] then used the blade to frame the Britons and justify restarting the war effort.[8] Inspired by Rhodri's declaration, Ivarr had a blue dragon tattooed on the left side of his face in the hours before attacking Caustow Castle.[9] Later that century, Eivor met Erik Loyalskull, a member of Ragnar Lothbrok's Lost Drengir who carried the spear Fafnir's Fang, which was named for the slain dragon.[11]

In the early 18th century, the pirate Alonzo Batilla bought the brig Dragon and collected a holy figurine of a Chinese dragon.[3] In 1753, the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order regularly held their meetings at the Green Dragon Tavern in northern Boston.[12] Decades later during the French Revolution, the Parisian Assassin Arno Dorian acquired a rifle named The Iron Dragon.[13]

In 1868, the British Assassin twins Evie and Jacob Frye were gifted the Flame Dragon and Jade Dragon cane-swords from their London underworld contact Robert Topping, both of which had handles sculpted in the shape of Chinese dragons.[14]

Animus mods[edit | edit source]

In 2020, while reliving Eivor's genetic memories through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, the Assassin Layla Hassan modified the Animus interface to allow for a variety of skins to be applied to Eivor's raven Sýnin:

Image Name Description Availability
Legiana A small flying wyvern that emits an aura of cold. Try to not let it perch on your shoulder without winter garb. Reda's Shop or Monster Hunter: World Pack
Nepja With wings of frost and talons of glistening ice, this infant creature will grow to become fearsome indeed. Reda's Shop or Niflheim Pack
Ormr Could this small creature be of the same lineage as the great World Serpent? Only by traveling with it can you find out. Reda's Shop or Jormungandr Pack
Scales The previous owner's pet name for the diminutive flying lizard that kept following him around on his adventures. Reda's Shop or Dark Knight Pack
Wyrmling Small, but ferocious, companion. At this stage of development, it is hard to say this will grow to be a dragon, a wyrm, a drake or a wyvern. Reda's Shop or Knight of the Round Table Pack

Layla also included in her Animus the option to change the appearance of Eivor's raven Sýnin to look like a drakeling,[15] a wyrmling,[16] an ice dragon called "Nepja",[17] a dragon called "Ormr",[18] a dragon called "Scales",[19] or a wyvern called "Legiana".[20] Layla later added digital models of the shield Dragonguard and two gear sets for her sessions as Eivor as well.[21]

In similar fashion, when Basim ibn Ishaq's memories were viewed through another Animus, it also allowed for a dragon skin to be applied to his eagle Enkidu:
