Pierre de Rosteguy de Lancre, Lord of De Lancre (1553 – 1631), was a judge from Bordeaux, France, and a member of the Parisian Rite of the Templar Order.
Appointed by King Henry IV, Lancre was the inquisitor who oversaw the Labourd witch-hunt of 1609,[1] using it as a cover to search for an artifact hidden by the healer Catherine. When she refused to talk, Lancre accused her of witchcraft and burned her alive in Bayonne before her adoptive daughters Margaux and Ermeline. The latter was then kept as a hostage by the Templar, while Margaux managed to escape.[2]
