Yangzhou General's Residence was the manor owned by Grand General Meng Tian in Yangzhou City, Shang Commandery during the Qin dynasty.

History[edit | edit source]

Grand General Meng Tian was provided this estate as his residence when his command was based in Yangzhou near the northern frontier of the Qin. In 215 BCE, after troops under the Department of Immortality massacred the inhabitants of the nearby Jade Spring Village, one of its surviving youxia infiltrated mansion to uncover evidence of Meng Tian's role in the attack. During their search, they found a message penned on behalf of the general that alluded to the Immortality Department's insubordination and was ordering its officers to report to his post at the Great Wall for inspection.[1]

The youxia followed up on this lead by heading to the Great Wall themselves. By chance, they helped to thwart a surprise assault by the Xiongnu while there and earned the favour of the grand general, who invited them back to their residence for an official audience to discuss their rewards.[2] On the day of their meeting, the youxia was already waiting inside the estate courtyard when Meng Tian walked in with Zhao Gao, one of Qin Shi Huang's chief advisors. They were escorted by Yang Duanhe, the commander of the Department of Immortality. Recognizing Duanhe as the man directly responsible for the destruction of their home and the murder of their sworn brother, the youxia rushed to attack him on sight.[3]

Meng Tian's guards intercepted them, giving Duanhe and Zhao Gao the chance to flee the estate. As the youxia dispatched the guards, Meng Tian himself engaged in combat to try to subdue them. The two fought until the Qin general disarmed the youxia, but as he followed up with another strike, the Tianyan Stone at the youxia's waist activated to imbue them with renewed strength, allowing them to fend off what would have been a killing blow. Meng Tian was stunned by this turn of events into ceasing hostilities since he happened to recognize the stone's connection to the youxia's master Wei Yu, one of his former comrades-in-arms. With this distant connection established, the general was willing to surreptitiously supply the youxia with information they needed to take down Duanhe, whom he suspected of colluding with the Xiongnu but could not move against directly.[3]
