The Vaticano District (English: Vatican District), or simply the Vatican, was one of the four districts of Rome during the Renaissance. Situated on the west bank of the Tiber river, it was the location of some of Rome's greatest landmarks, such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Castel Sant'Angelo.

History

On 28 December 1499, Pope Alexander VI gave mass in the Sistine Chapel, but was attacked by the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who had crossed the Passetto di Borgo, thereby avoiding the district itself. While the Pope survived the attack, Ezio and his uncle, Mario Auditore, fled towards the Tiber after Ezio's encounter with Minerva, a member of the First Civilization, in the Vatican Vault.

Later, in June of 1501, Ezio broke into the Castel Sant'Angelo and liberated Caterina Sforza, who was being held captive after the events of the siege of Monteriggioni. In the following years, he returned and located an entrance to a Lair of Romulus underneath St. Peter's.

The Assassin returned again on 18 August 1503, when he stole the Apple of Eden from the courtyard of the Basilica and escaped.

In the war between the Italian Assassins and the Crows, the Grand Master of the Crows, Sirus Favero, who was working with the Brotherhood at the time, met the Assassin Lo Sparviero outside the Castel Sant'Angelo and tasked him to retrieve a sealed letter from a Borgia messenger. After Lo Sparviero delivered the letter, Sirus lured him into an ambush, which the Assassin escaped from after killing all the Crows who attacked him. At the climax of the final battle between the Brotherhood and the Crows, Sirus was assassinated by Lo Sparviero near the Castel Sant'Angelo.

Trivia

• The Vatican did not include any merchants or landmarks that could be renovated. Additionally, it is treated as being free from Borgia control on the Borgia Tower map for the duration of the game.
• No tunnels reached the district. As such, it could only be accessed by crossing the Tiber, either via the Ponte Sant'Angelo or by using a boat.
• Of all the districts in Rome, the Vatican was the smallest.
• The Vatican is the only district in which cardinals and Papal Guards can be found outside of memories.
• Guards in the Vaticano District were better armored and could sustain more damage than guards found in other districts.
• In Assassin's Creed: Identity, only a small part of the Vatican can be explored, namely the area around the Castel Sant'Angelo. Because the gameplay does not support swimming, the player can only traverse the Tiber by freerunning over boats underneath the Ponte Sant'Angelo.
