Ulf was a Norseman who lived in Stavanger during the 9th century. He was married to a woman named Alvig.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Ulf was a friend of the merchant Thorsteinn and his wife Gunnhilda, once purchasing a woolen cloak from the latter for his mother in 866. His mother loved the cloak, which led Ulf to express his gratitude and admiration for Gunnhilda's weaving techniques.[1]

That year, Thorsteinn and Gunnhilda were accused of being oathbreakers by Thorsteinn's rival Bjorn for providing poor quality sails to be used in the ships for King Harald's expeditions. During Thorsteinn's speech to rally people to his side, he revealed Bjorn's acts of sabotage, revealing he had evidence in which Bjorn had taken Gunnhilda's sails for himself while he using a sail he bought from Nottfall as a substitute. Ulf vouched for Gunnhilda's stiching abilities, clarifying that the sail in question was no work of Gunnhilda's.[1]

Later on, Ulf attended an assembly in which Thorsteinn successfully proved his innocence and uncovering Bjorn's acts of treachery in front of King Harald. When Harald called for Bjorn to be removed from the expedition and exiled from the realm, Ulf was one of those who supported his call.[1]
